HOSTAGE TAKING AND THE ECONOMY OF EDO STATE, IMPLICATION FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Abstract This work on hostage taking is centered around Edo State. Although little retrospective discussion will be made regards the world. It keenly reviews the situation generally and finally narrows it to the economy of Edo State. In the aspect of the economy of Edo State. In the aspect of the economy which in turn affect economy development of the state. Marginalization use of military force, political factors and others are seen as causes of hostage taking in Edo State. Also the fast residing economy resulting from the hostage taking, destruction of lives and property, general panics, insecurity situation in the nation and other formed the effect discusses. Population size of the study covers the students and staff of College of Education, Ekiadolor. Hypothesis 1 is about the remote and immediate causes of hostage taking. Hypothesis 2 states whether or not the incidents of hostage taking help the people of Edo State. Hypothesis 3 is on whether hostage taking contributes to the economy development of the state. Why hypothesis 5 is hostage taking and military intervention. From respondents we were able to give solution and recommendations such as massive infrastructural development, dialogue, employment opportunities and others. The non-uniformity of the cultural attributes among the various ethnic groups in the region is ascribable to the difference in background. All the tribes in the region are however in harmony with one another. The divergence of culture in the state is as a result of the influence of the environment lived. 1.1 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of this study is to examine the various incidents of hostage taking on the economy and their implications on the economics development of the state as well proffer solutions to the lingering problem. 1.2 RESEARCH QUESTIONS i. What are the immediate and remote causes of hostage taking in the Niger delta? ii. Does this incident of hostage taking help the people of Edo State? iii. Does hostage taking contributes positively to the economic development of Edo State? iv. Will military invasion on some communities in Edo State help to reduce cases of hostage taking? 1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The significance of the study cannot be over emphasized. The study will highlight useful information’s concerning the effect of hostage taking on the economy and educational developments in Edo State. It will also serve as a review for other researchers who may want to study about this socio economic and development in Edo State. And proffer solution to stem the ugly trend. 1.5 DEFINITION OF TERMS Hostage Taking: This can be described or defined as the abduction of fellow human being for a reason which may not serve the interest of the hostage. It is a deliberate and systematic but forceful process orchestrated through individual or group effort to move on individual or group of persons to other destinations other than for varying reasons only known to the captors. Cessation of Hostilities: Stop all manner of fighting, taking of hostage, vandalization of oil pipe lines, taking up of arms against security operatives and all forms of unrest. Pluralistic in the socio cultural background: This implies that Edo State is occupied by different ethnic nationalities with diverse cultural attributes. Polymorphous on Cultural Attributes: This means that the region went through several stages of developing its cultural attributes whereby the historical origins of the people are quit different from one another.
